TO JIMMYI never knew you.
I never watched you climb your tree
or run against the wind.
I never knew your grin or heard your voice,
a silver sound of joy in summer.
I never touched your tears
or hushed your fears when thunder broke,
or spoke to you of life and stars.
And yet I know you
because I know your mother's heart.I have often seen you in her eyes,
have heard your voice inside of hers:
your sighs, your words, your boyish laugh.
And sometimes I have even sensed your steps beside me
when I've walked with her on autumn paths.
So everytime I hold her hand now
I try to hold yours too,
to comfort you when she weeps inside the dark.
Because, sweet child, I know you now
and love you surely as my own
because I also know and love your mother's heart.I have seen your tree in Grandpa's yard,
have gazed up through branches where once you climbed,
and in that moment asked beneath the wind:
In time, please love me in return,
and help me be deserving of your mother's heart.Michael Stephens
